This arrangement of There is a balm in Gilead (an African-American spiritual text and tune) is an easy general purpose anthem. This fragrant and healing balm is related to a resin or oil obtained from plants or trees in the Gilead mountainous region on the east side of the Jordan River according to the Old Testament. Genesis 37:25 mentions balm brought by the Ishmeelites coming from Gilead and Jeremiah 8:22 asks if there is no balm left in Gilead.
This spiritual, though, most likely uses the balm as a metaphor for Jesus as healer and comforter. While coming from the Old Testament scripture, it provides a wonderful simile of the healing we receive from Jesus.
Use during the offertory, during communion and on the following lectionary-related Sundays would be an appropriate use of this spiritual anthem: Year A, Proper 14 (19) after Pentecost and Year C - Proper 20 (25) after Pentecost.
